    • The best driver's car of 2017 is the Ferrari 488 GTB but did MotorTrend let Ferrari win?

      MotorTrend's Best Drier's Car competition is always interesting to watch. The videos are well done and they provide plenty of data. The field they choose is not always the most logical though. What the hell is a Lexus LC500 doing in this competition? Also, why is there no BMW? That omission may be BMW's fault more than that of anyone else.


      Just taking up space that could be used for a serious entry. Regardless, it is a pretty good lineup with all eyes on the 488 GTB. Let's list the entries in order of curb weight from lightest to heaviest:


      The Miata undercuts the field considerably and the Lexus LC500 almost weighs 2000 pounds more than the Miata. Wow is it fat.

      This competition is about what is the most fun to drive but it is always interesting to see which car is the fastest. They are listed below in order of their trap speed and with additional data panels:
























      The Ferrari is the fastest? That is a load of BS. Either Ferrari sent a ringer or MotorTrend is cooking the numbers. There are plenty of videos out there showing the McLaren 570S dispatch the 488 with ease. This alone calls into question the validity of the comparison.

      Regardless, here are the cars in order of their laptime around Laguna Seca:


      The 488 GTB which trails the AMG GT R on the Nurburgring considerably opens up a large lead on the AMG GT R at Laguna Seca? Something doesn't smell right here.

      MotorTrend chooses the 488 GTB as the best driver's car but it does not feel right. The Ferrari dominates all the performance categories along with the subjective ones. If one were to guess, Ferrari provided the car only if they got this outcome as they have previously controlled MotorTrend's testing.

      BoostAddict doesn't buy the result and neither should you. Watch the videos from the cars below and come to your own conclusion.

        I'm a little disappointed with the Cayman S time. I thought it would be trading shots with the Grandsport's class now that it has respectable straight line performance. I certainly didn't expect it to be beaten by the 5mph higher trapping, but 600lb heavier, Alfa.

        Pretty much a guarantee that for a test of this magnitude Ferrari sent a ringer that was tuned and with "special" tires.

        Hate to admit but the Grand Sport is prolly the best value/performance/look on the list!

        If Ferrari sent ringers with NA cars in the past i can only imagine how bad it is with the new turbo cars. But despite that the 488 is still almost 10mph down on the 720S Click here to enlarge

        @Sticky more wood for the fire...motor trend is the only magazine not to report any issues with Ferrari's cousin Giulia. Car and Driver said they couldn't get a clean run at lightning lap because of the engine going into fuel starvation mode after the same corner...even on a full tank! So I question that as well.

        The Ferrari 458 "ringers" last time they did this test supposedly came with the 458 GT3 engine. Just go talk to the technicians at the local Ferrari dealer who remembered prepping and servicing that specific 458 to make sure it outperformed the competition.

        The Nurburgring 488 time and AMG GTR time are not comparable. One was factory backed, one was an independent test. With that being said, I still don't know how the Ferrari is that fast. It shouldn't be 1.4 seconds quicker but then again it's MUCH lighter and that track is very tight and narrow.

        It is odd since it doesn't trail by much in a straightline and is lighter with better balance.

        Guess the Cayman GTS will have the suspension and brake work needed.

        EXACTLY and the independent AMG time was quicker.
