    • BMS 2017 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport baseline dyno and Stage I VR30DDTT testing plus tuned Q50 overlay

The Infiniti VR30DDTT engine platform is going to be popular for tuners. BMS a couple months back started alpha testing their Stage I tune on a standard Q50 3.0. The result was an impressive 413 horsepower to the wheels.

Let's take a look at a baseline for the 400 crank horsepower Q50 Red Sport:

An underrated 374 horsepower and 397 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. The standard Q50 3.0 by contrast on the same Dynojet puts down 321 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque at the wheels.

When tuned, things get interesting. Adding 4 psi of boost gets the Q50 Red Sport to 405 horsepower at the wheels:

Using the BMS Stage1 to add 3psi to the factory curve (the default setting) resulted in ~395whp and ~429wtq. Decent gains. We also tested 4psi which jumped power up to ~405whp and ~454wtq.

What's become apparent with the Red Sport is the little turbos are simply not able to produce much more boost up top, but there is plenty of room down low to boost torque.
BMS did further testing with some E85 blended in and picked up a massive torque gain down low:

Much more torque than a tuned Q50 3.0 but the peak power is slightly less. This a lesson in area under the curve.

Now, here is an overlay between the Stage I tuned Q50 3.0 and the Red Sport Q50:

Essentially, a wash. If you want to save money and just get a BMS JB1 to match the Red Sport, that is not a bad way to go.

It will be interesting to see how much further the Red Sport can be taken considering how hard Infiniti pushes the turbochargers from the factory.

When are they going to throw this engine into the 370Z so that it's actually competitive? I haven't seen or heard anything about a successor for that car and it's almost a 10 year old platform.

I don't know if they are doing another Z.

It would be cool to have this engine in it for sure although I kind of like the Z how it is.
